Teenage ladies are taken severely in Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige’s energetic coming-of-age drama. In Montreal, a blizzard rages as Alex (Paloma Vauthier) pores over her mom Maia’s “reminiscence field”, a trove of correspondence from her youth in Nineteen Eighties Beirut. Notebooks, pictures and cassette tapes kind a self-portrait of Maia’s adolescence, detailing her vices (smoking), secret boyfriends (“Raja”) and favorite songs (Fade to Gray by Visage). They’re additionally a portal to her recollections of the Lebanese civil warfare, a painful expertise she has chosen to not share together with her daughter. Hadjithomas and Joreige thoughtfully discover trauma whereas remaining joyful, animating Maia’s photographs, which fizz, crackle and dance to life on display.
