There is no such thing as a prohibition on onion exports, and India shipped the merchandise for USD 523.8 million from April to December 2022, based on the Commerce Ministry on Sunday.
Simply the export of onion seed is prohibited, based on the assertion issued by the Ministry.
“Authorities has not restricted or prohibited the export of onions,” the ministry mentioned in an announcement.
“DGFT vide Notification No. 50 dt. 28.12.2020 amended export coverage of Onion (of all varieties) in reduce, sliced or damaged in powder kind and Bangalore Rose onions and Krishnapuram onions excluding reduce, sliced or damaged in powder kind from ‘prohibited’ to ‘free’,” additional reads the assertion.
Onion exports elevated by nearly 50% to USD 52.1 million in December 2022.
From April-December this yr, the exports grew by 16.3 per cent to USD 523.8 million.
In a tweet on Saturday, Commerce and Business Minister Piyush Goyal emphasised that there isn’t any prohibition on onion exports from India to any nation, and that wrong remarks on the contrary are horrible.
“There is no such thing as a ban on onion exports from India to any nation and deceptive statements suggesting the opposite is unlucky. Infact, from July-December 2022, onion exports have constantly been above the $40 million mark each month, benefiting our Annadatas,” the Union Minister tweeted.

The remark was tweeted in response to NCP chief Supriya Sule’s tweet on February 25 on onion exports.

“Onion producing farmers of Maharashtra should bear the brunt of the dearth of consistency within the import-export coverage of agricultural commodities. There was an enormous inflow of onions within the home market,” she had tweeted.
