Russian forces occupying the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southeast Ukraine are making ready to connect with Crimea and are damaging the plant by reorienting its electrical energy manufacturing, Ukrainian operator Energoatom warned on Tuesday.

It’s the largest nuclear energy plant in Europe and was occupied by Russia early in its invasion. Kyiv and Moscow blamed each other for attacks on the plant last week.

“The Russian navy on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear energy plant are implementing this system of (Russian operator) Rosatom aimed toward connecting the plant to the Crimean electrical energy grid,” Energoatom president Petro Kotin informed Ukrainian tv on Tuesday.

“To do that, you need to first injury the ability traces of the plant related to the Ukrainian vitality system. From August 7 to 9, the Russians have already broken three energy traces. For the time being, the plant is working with just one manufacturing line, which is an especially harmful manner of working,” he added.

“When the final manufacturing line is disconnected, the plant can be powered by mills operating on diesel. Every little thing will then rely upon their reliability and gas shares,” Mr Kotin warned.
